We are THE SILVER PANDA

'So Stark (You're A Skyscraper)' is the fifth of ten instalments of our debut album, entitled ‘Freak Scene’, which we're releasing song by song, one every two weeks over the next few months...

The album is a set of ‘weird covers’… The original versions were all recorded between ’88 & ’92, by bands that used guitar noise at the centre of their sound (call it grunge, art punk, indie rock, shoegaze, whatever) - Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine… - and our versions strip away the dirt & the electricity, and reinvent what’s left with acoustic instruments, harmony voices, Latin percussion, jazz-inflected woodwinds…

The first four singles, our versions of Dinosaur Jr.'s 'Freak Scene', Pavement's 'Summer Babe', 'You Made Me Realise' by My Bloody Valentine & 'She Rides The Waves by the Pale Saints, are available from a sidebar near you >>>

"The single is a Silver Panda flavoured re-work of Pavement's 1992 b-side 'So Stark (You're A Skyscraper)' (originally released as one of two songs on the flip of their 'Trigger Cut' single)...

The original is gorgeously grungey and sleazy, with an impassioned vocal from the young Stephen Malkmus, whereas The Silver Panda build their version around an acoustic guitar ostinato reminiscent of 'Pink Moon' era Nick Drake, topped with mellotron-like clarinet chords and their trademark 'wide harmony' vocals... And an unexpected switch into an infectious Latin 6/8 jazz waltz for the outro... Something a little different from anything you've heard from them so far, to round off 'Side One' of the LP, and every bit as good!"
